BROCKTON — Food Basket International holds its official grand opening today, Friday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. at 683 Belmont St., the former Stop & Shop, according to Hoodline and The Enterprise, which cited the business's Facebook page. The store has been open since a soft opening in September.
The company's website lists halal beef, lamb, goat and poultry, along with seafood, fresh produce and international groceries. The Enterprise reported that shoppers can also pick up carry-out Haitian, Cape Verdean, Indian and Bangladeshi dishes.
For Muslim families south of Boston, that is welcome news. Co-owner Alauddin Chowdhury told The Enterprise the store is meant to bring Brockton residents together and offer halal groceries and familiar foods, and said some local shoppers used to drive to the company's Lowell store for certain fish and spices.
