Worcester is the second-largest city in New England, and its halal food scene is spread out in a way that rewards a little planning. Shawarma and grill plates sit side by side in the Canal District, a cluster of halal spots and a halal market share a stretch of Lincoln Street, and Iraqi, Somali and Pakistani kitchens are scattered from Pleasant Street to Shrewsbury Street. With the clocks falling back on Nov. 1 and Maghrib arriving before most people finish work, it is a good season to know where a quick, reliable halal meal is.

This guide groups the Worcester listings in the Mass Halal restaurant directory by part of the city, so you can plan around work, school or prayer. A note before you go: in our directory, "directory-reported" means a halal directory such as Zabihah lists the place as halal. It is not a certificate. If certification matters to you, ask to see it, and ask which items are halal when a menu mixes halal and non-halal food. Menus, owners and suppliers change, so it is always fair to ask again.

Water Street and the Canal District

Water Street, just east of downtown, is the closest thing Worcester has to a halal row. Three listings sit within a short walk of each other.

Sham, 50 Water Street. A Mediterranean kitchen whose own website promises "smoky grilled meats, fluffy rice, warm pita," with dishes like a chicken shawarma bowl over seasoned rice with garlic sauce. Our directory lists it as fully halal, directory-reported. Directory listing

Bay State Shawarma & Grill, 96 Water Street. Middle Eastern and Mediterranean plates, listed as halal, directory-reported. It takes delivery orders through DoorDash, which is handy for a late weeknight. Directory listing

Shah's Halal Food, 139 Water Street. The New York-style chicken and rice platter, listed as fully halal, directory-reported. Directory listing

If you are downtown at lunch, the city also has a Chicken & Rice Guys, which we covered in an earlier story. Read our earlier story

Downtown and Pleasant Street

Shawarma Palace, 20 Franklin Street. A Lebanese and Middle Eastern spot near City Hall and the Common, listed as halal, directory-reported. Its menu is posted on its own website. Directory listing

Aladdin, 320 Pleasant Street. An Iraqi and Middle Eastern kitchen west of downtown on the Pleasant Street corridor. Zabihah lists it as fully halal. Directory listing

Lincoln Street and the north side

Crown Fried Chicken, 443 Lincoln Street. Fried chicken and American fast food, listed as fully halal, directory-reported. Directory listing

Golden House Grill, 490 Lincoln Street, Suite 10. Lebanese and Mediterranean, listed as halal, directory-reported, and practically across the street from Crown. Directory listing

Fatima's Café, 43 West Boylston Street. A rare menu that crosses Somali, East African, Indian and Middle Eastern cooking, listed as fully halal, directory-reported. Directory listing

Fresh Farm, 560 Lincoln Street, is a market rather than a restaurant, and our directory lists it as fully halal. It is the easiest stop on this side of the city if you want to cook at home. Market listing

Shrewsbury Street and the east side

Grill 352 & Kabab, 352 Shrewsbury Street. Kebabs and grill plates with Pakistani, Indian and Iraqi influences, on the restaurant strip that runs from downtown toward Lake Quinsigamond. Zabihah lists it as fully halal. Directory listing

Over the line in Shrewsbury, along Route 9, Best Meat House (510 Boston Turnpike, Suite D) and India Market (1000 Boston Turnpike) both say they sell zabiha halal meat, according to our market listings. Best Meat House · India Market

A fast-food note

Our directory also lists the Popeyes at 622 Park Avenue as fully halal, based on a directory report. Halal status at chain restaurants can vary from one location to the next, and it can change. If you go, ask at the counter before you order, and do not assume another Popeyes is the same. Directory listing

Where to pray nearby

The Worcester Islamic Center at 248 East Mountain Street, on the north side of the city, is the main masjid for many Worcester families. Its website posts prayer times, Friday programs, a Sunday school and parking rules, which are worth reading before Jumu'ah. It is less than two miles from the Lincoln Street listings. Masjid listing · WIC website

East of the city, the Boroughs Islamic Society in Westborough is a short drive down Route 9 from the Shrewsbury markets. Masjid listing

Prayer times move earlier after Nov. 1. Our guide to the time change explains why Maghrib in Massachusetts will come before 4:30 p.m. by late November. Read the guide
