In Roxbury, the Islamic Multi-Service Organization (IMSO) puts care for neighbors into practice through food assistance and community support. The organization says its food pantry serves more than 1,500 people each month—work that connects Muslim values of generosity with the everyday needs of local families.
The pantry welcomes people of different backgrounds and faiths. In a July 2025 profile, the Greater Boston Food Bank described volunteers transforming a local gymnasium into a supermarket-style distribution space, setting up food, helping neighbors and packing everything away afterward. Available foods included halal meat, fresh produce, eggs and milk.
That partnership has helped support the pantry’s work. The food bank’s profile also described a grant that helped IMSO purchase a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, providing storage for fresh and frozen food. For families who need halal options, access to suitable groceries is an important part of meaningful food assistance.
For our brothers and sisters across Massachusetts, this is a local example of how service can bring communities together. Helping a neighbor can begin with something practical: giving time, sharing a skill or supporting the people who keep a pantry running.
IMSO invites volunteers to assist with food distribution, events and teaching. It also welcomes donations and people willing to contribute skills in education, trades or community outreach.
